Bangladesh’s sports adviser wants to ban national team cricketers from joining politics
Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, Bangladesh’s New Youth and Sports adviser, stated on Wednesday, September 4, that he will suggest that current cricket players not be Allow from entering politics.
The suggested directive makes reference to all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan and former captain Mashrafe Mortaza, who have both been actively involved in politics during their international careers.
“One can enter politics after retirement, but it shouldn’t happen while playing because there may be a conflict of interest and a lack of professionalism,” he stated. “I don’t think they should play together and do politics.” I’ve previously discussed it.
Upon entering politics, the cricket players’ perspective also shifted. It goes beyond politics. They are allowed to conduct business, but there ought to be restrictions on what they are allowed to do. There are claims that several Indian cricket players and possibly some Bangladeshis are involved in the betting business (endorsement). Thus, in my opinion, there ought to be a rule in this area; the BCB can correct it. Asif continued, saying that his organization would also advise against allowing a board president to serve more than two terms because he believes that if that were allowed, there would be a risk that the long-serving leader would become an authoritarian.
Nazmul Hasan, a former president of the BCB, was elected to the board twice before taking office as president for the first time in 2012. In 2013 and 2017, he was spared from running in the elections since his panel was not challenged. But in 2021, Nazmul chose not to have a panel, thus they had to go through the trials of an election.
